VCV Rack – How it Works

VCV Rack – How it Works by Edgar Rothermich was one of only two books I was able to find about VCV Rack.

Recently I purchased the print version of this book for $15. It is a visual quick start guide, that is color coded and in a large 8 1/2 by 11 inch format.

Unfortunately “VCV Rack – How it Works” was written in 2018 and covers an older version of VCV Rack v0.6.2c The current version is v1.1.6.

Fortunately
a PDF version of “VCV Rack – How it Works” is available for free from Edgar’s website http://www.DingDingMusic.com. Once on the website look for “Graphically Enhanced Manuals” and then for “Free Books. A donation to Edgar is suggested.

VCV Rack allows the cables that connect the modules to be in one of four colors (red, green, blue and yellow). Edgar suggests using Blue for audio signals, Red for control signals and Yellow for clock signals. One of the early synthesizers I worked with had two types of actual cables; Pin Plugs for control signals and 1/8 inch plugs for audio signals.

The key difference between v.0.6.2c and v1.1.6 is that the “Bridge Mode” interface between VCV Rack and a DAW (Digital Audio Workbench) such as Logic Pro X is no longer supported. As stated on the VCV Rack website, this capability will be deferred to version 2.0 of VCV Rack for an additional charge of $99.
